While I didnt pick up any dark chocolate from Pirate Kake, I did indeed find it to be buttery smooth (and slightly sweet, just like them caramels) and I also found it to be delectably salty some (and so the name, Pirate Kake perchance -- the salty)? Rating: 5 out of 5 big hoop earings and cutlass', Enjoy. Fantastic smoke. When rotated with other blends (I smoked Virginias around this) it was really good, but trying to go bowl after bowl until the tin was empty was just too much for me. The aroma was all latakia and the taste was pretty much the same. I am thrilled to find a blend where I can enjoy the flavor and spice of the Turkish without it being overpowering. A smooth, robust blend with LOTS (75%!) The smokiness is cool and mellow, very nice, but I failed to really see how this was a team effort. I revisited me old block of Pirate Kake about a week ago, and found it had dried quite a bit more than I wanted it to. Totally my own fault : ). Flavoring? Now as excited as I was about all the hype I jarred it as soon as I opened it and promptly rubbed some out and filled my bowl. I love it. I just find it has that lovely latakia s pice without burning me out. So, I sat back down and enjoyed the rest of the bowl! This is definitely one of my desert island choices. Smoking this tobacco reminds me of eating foods that have been really heavily smoked. Other than that, I believe this to be the perfect blend for true lover's of Latakia, it showcases the rich, velvety, smokey, slightly sweet, delectability of Latakia, while offering a robust, yet silky smooth, full smoking experience. This blend has a lot of charm. All in all, a different and unique pipe smoking experience; it will not be in the regular rotation, and I would not seek out again. Still great within its genre.however, and a big however it is, it tends to get overwhelming and is almost too much of a great thing. The VA's may be lower in percentage, but they are first rate and their earthy sweetness are obvious. Its a straight, delicious, full tobacco. Rubs out well and makes a very smooth smoke. especially the Turkish, which I really like. I am trying this out today as I wanted a full throttle Latakia smoke for a change of pace. UPDATE: 12/3/2013 Not just a lat bomb. Just too much Latakia for me. Comes in a crumble cake form, like a dried out brownie. Comparable to an Is lay Whiskey in smokiness, though if one is looking for notes of peat I recommend C&D's 'Strathspey'. A Latakia lover's treasure. (how many times did I say smoky so far? Another aspect that makes it great is the fact that when you pack a bowl, it does not have the tendenciy to spring back up. It is not a Latakia bomb, but a super creamy, medium body, medium strength medium deepness Latakia blend. The good point is the concentration on Latakia, with no corrections, and this is also a weak point, since it flattens the experience. The first thing that hit me. As a person who likes just about all styles and blends, I purchased a 'brick' of this stuff simply to see what the extreme end of the Latakia spectrum was like. Heavy in each puff but always controlled by the Burley and Orientals, the Latakia seemed almost like a mild perfume that the other two were wearing. I really wanted to like this tobacco, but I find the heavy latakia blend to be too parching to enjoy regularly. The taste is a rich, creamy, smooth almost minty flavor with latakia dominating the senses. The smoke has zero bite and is full of flavor. It doesn't bite me any, regardless of my technique, it's just a very comfortable smoke. Taste wood, mildly sweet, some floral and smokey earthy flavors. The generous amount of smokey Latakia (75%) combined with the sweetness of the Turkish and hit of nicotine from the burley really agreed with my taste buds. This is for those dirty pirates!!! Of all the C&D blends I have sampled, this one indubitably stands head-and-shoulders (in the crows nest, matey) above all the rest. I know I like it, but I am not sure if it will always be in my stock. The blend smokes really smooth. Whatever. Pirate Kake is distantly similar in taste to CAO's Old Ironsides, but the Latakia content here is much more overwhelming. I know, "BLASPHEME!" I've never smoked a blend with this much Latakia and would not have, had it not been given to me. The kake is very crumbly, easy to break into chunks or rub out. I must say that I was surprised at the smoothness of this blend considering its very high latakia content. Great stuff, IF you like latakia dominated blends. Yes its filled with Latakia to the brim, but as mentioned by blenders before, Latakia has this kind of event horizon, where if you use enough of it, its less of a lat bomb than blends with less Latakia. For a cigar smoker I think latakia is the way to go - Its a stronger flavor and extremely relaxing, that virginia stuff does not compare! If you love latakia this is for you. Due to the descriptors I used, it is a smoke best enjoyed outdoors or in the privacy of your smoking room. Unlike Billy Budd, where cigar leaves are blended, Pirate Kake is always a delicious blend, both before and after meals. Amazingly smooth and heavenly delicious! This tobacco is incredibly smooth and cool to smoke. This is a dark black brick which crumbles into wonderful flakes very easily and is able to be sprinked and packed nicely - a few lighter colored flakes are evident in the crumbling. Not much to say beyond that. For Example: Enter 16 in quantity box for 1 pound. It's not unusual to get a two hour smoke out of this combination. I had forgotten how nice that first blast of latakia is when it's lit. Easy to break off and prepare in your pipe. While for me Penzance is for special occasions, Pirate Kake is the perfect last smoke of the day for every day. Good sturdy blend for those afternoons/evenings when you want to slow down and count your dubloons, leathery campfire notes with a hint of spice from those orientals just enough burley to balence the blend out nicely. Choose Options. I consider wondefull, fully taste, flavour and scent. Ten Russians is still the latakia heavy blend I reach for but this is a nice step down. I took it up after having given up the pipe for a decade or so, took it up again, and wanted to recapture the intensity of the Balkan blend I used to smoke in my university days. I started smoking pipes a couple years ago with those pouches you could get out of stores and nothing against those tobacco are the people that smoke them just thought something was missing I finally found this smoking pipes.com website ordered a tin of nightcap and that was my 1st real true experience with great tinned tobacco and that was my 1st while moment smoking a pipe while now you can't get nightcap anymore and I was looking for that wow again and just happened to pick up a can of pirate cake and this is as close a second to the while that I 1st experienced the nightcap not saying the tobaccos are similar just saying that while factor has to be the 2nd best tobacco that I've ever tried and will order more and more this is just a great smoke everything you could want every feeling every emotion just a great all around smoking tobacco. I love Latakia. It burns dry and relatively cool. I could easily do back-to-back bowls of it, but I'm not a new smoker so YMMV. sample and I liked this blend so much, I ordered 8 ounces then 16 ounces sizes to store and smoke over time. I like Burley tobaccos as well, I just don't think this blend uses it well. I pack it somewhat loosly and it lights easily and burns nicely.
